AS IS ALWAYS THE CASE with my “on the road” blogging, this will be brief and likely devoid of linkage or fine tuning or formatting I would prefer because I am typing this on my iPhone. But coming out here to accept an award for what we have done with the Sanctuary is huge to me. And worth it. That’s today.
OF THE SANCTUARY, the latest developments, and Nezua’s flight to Atlanta to receive on the group’s behalf an award for Blogging in Ethnic Media. Also, news of our Luis Ramirez piece being printed, and an appeal for good vibes, Xanax, and spare change.
THREE THINGS immediately shock the conscious soul upon learning about the murder of Luis Ramirez. The simple manner in which he died is the first of those. His death was a gruesome and violent one, and inarguably racially motivated. And yet, that is not the most horrific part of the killing.
IN 2009, I will be traveling to a few different events and speaking on panels or presenting/appearing in one way or another. The second event scheduled, though first to be announced, is a panel on New Media at the Annual NCLR Conference in Chicago in late July.
NO MATTER WHAT your position on immigration law happens to be; no matter how many generations your family has been rooted in this soil, these kinds of abuses are unacceptable. Treating our fellow humans in these ways simply is not, as they say, American.
HATE DOES NOT EMERGE FROM A VACUUM. Nor could it thrive there, we might add. Just as many hands are required to bring about positive change in our culture, so are many energies and voices required to propagate negativity on a large scale. There is no doubt that a battle rages and that the heart of this nation is at stake.
NOBODY likes to think this way, yet we are well aware of how much the Right does not want to let go of the grip on power they thought they had and thought they would have forever. From Delay to Rove to Bush; from the last two stolen elections to the recent DOJ vote purge, the thieving Republicans have shown us that Democracy means nada to them. So we must prepare.
WHILE OUR ORIGINAL INTENT was to present a meaningful side-by-side comparison of both Senator Obama’s and Senator McCain’s answers to our survey in order to better inform voters, Senator McCain’s unwillingness to answer questions or go on the record with his positions on the specific details covered in the questionnaire has made this impossible.
FRAIDYCAT MCCAIN and his Republican cronies and conspirers continue to do what they always do: lie to us, pretend to be what they ain’t, and endeavour to use us to feed their own power. This is not our people. This is liars wearing masks that have a McCain face painted on the outside, and blood of nuestra gente dripping down the inside, where they can sniff and lick at it in privacy, feeding their vampiric lifestyles and political agendas.
POOR JOHN MCCAIN. First he says he cares about migrants and their plight, and then he doesn’t. First he is for comprehensive and humane immigration reform…and then…I mean, really. Who the hell knows what he’s saying anymore.
FOLLOWING UP on John McCain’s growing Latino Problem, Kety Esquivel of The Sanctuary is interviewed on CNN. This appearance is a followup to Kety’s last interview, wherein she announced the questionnaire that her and the rest of our group at the Sanctuary prepared and gave to the Presidential candidates.
AT A TIME when our communities are under siege with unduly harsh immigration enforcement measures, our young people are dropping out of high school and getting pregnant at higher rates, the schools that predominantly service our children are in a state of decline, healthcare is out of financial reach and racial profiling across the country is at its worst, we deserve more than empty political promises by a campaign that says it wants the Latino vote but doesn’t want to give our issues the time of day.
YOU MAY REMEMBER THAT MEMBERS OF THE SANCTUARY compiled a 38 point questionnaire on specific immigration questions and sent them to three presidential candidates with a deadline of the end of this month, June 2008.
