A group of friends and myself staged a mock immigration checkpoint where we racially profiled European immigrants and their descendants, and required them to show papers that proved they had a right to trespass on native land. Some were puzzled, many laughed, and a couple were furious. What made the difference in these reactions?

ARIZONA GOVERNOR JAN BREWER is desperately swinging back at the national boycotts and global condemnation demanding a repeal of Arizona’s SB 1070 (“Pro-Racial Profiling Law”). Last week, she commissioned a snarky frog-puppet video skit that promotes the widely condemned law by responding to all critics with an admonition to read the bill or shut up about it. This week News With Nezua—in the form of Zip and Zoe, puppet friends with their own Puppet Theater—responds.
THE ARIZONA BOYCOTT is about so much more than just one law. It is about more than just racial profiling, which already exists but which SB 1070 requires. This resistance to Arizona’s haywire approach to cultural change is about more than textbooks. It is about more than accents. It is about our América, which cannot be harmonious when we are all being so divided.
A TIMELESS TACTIC practiced by the oppressor is to burn the pages of all your history books. To shatter your statues and to destroy your icons of hope and power. Today in Arizona, these age-old methods play out yet again. But they cannot stop us, nor the truth of our peoples.
