THIS THANKSGIVING, like every other day, we should keep in mind the agricultural system that brings food to our tables. It is a system of people, after all. Let us give thanks to the low-wage workers, many of them immigrant and refugee, who make it possible to have such feasts.

WHY DO US HISTORY BOOKS and mainstream culture revere the pioneers and the US settlers in our lore? Why do the amoral and ruthless GOP always gain ground? I would whisper to you that the reason is the same reason that men’s violence can blossom in our culture, often unimpeded.

Not because I feel that our President-Elect, Barack Obama, is at The Cross Road in the sense of selling his soul to become President, or that he is “out alone after dark” in his new role as leader of the United States. Both possibilities are there, to be sure, but that is not what concerns me now…

She’ll Know Him as “The President”

I AM VERY HAPPY that my children will grow up to see Barack Obama as our President. I do think certain lines of thinking, where people imagine the arc of justice completed now that a black man is our President, go too far and too soon. But I know that from this day forward, children in the USA will grow up with a different idea of African Americans and our country, both.
