BIENVENIDOS! Let’s sit for a moment and savor this hot, sweet, brew as the sun rises over the land. Let’s share news of the day and talk about what we lend our hand to; how we can make things a little better for all, or reach a little higher ourselves, or root out injustice.
WE TALK HERE OFTEN about the climate of hate against Latin@s fomented by a confluence of factors from the detention industry to right wing radio to pandering (or racist politicians) to the efforts of hate groups like VDARE and FAIR….
OUR VOICES have yet to be utilized and enjoined in a way that can efficiently organize around the issues that affect our communities. We will not always agree, nor should we. But we should have a way to centralize and engage the politics that affect us on so many levels.
ALL OVER THE NATION, communities are clamoring to be heard. In this worsening economic landscape, migrant communities are being terrorized by violent raids, families are destabilized, wage earners are jailed or detained, and xenophobic pundits continue to fuel a rising wave of hate crimes against Latinos. The stakes could not be any higher.
OVER HERE, you have people working together to overcome changes that scare just about everyone. And over there, people are taking advantage of the fear that often accompanies these changes. In this season of giving and love and familia, may you and yours be surrounded by those who fight with and for you.
HATE DOES NOT EMERGE FROM A VACUUM. Nor could it thrive there, we might add. Just as many hands are required to bring about positive change in our culture, so are many energies and voices required to propagate negativity on a large scale. There is no doubt that a battle rages and that the heart of this nation is at stake.
AT A TIME when our communities are under siege with unduly harsh immigration enforcement measures, our young people are dropping out of high school and getting pregnant at higher rates, the schools that predominantly service our children are in a state of decline, healthcare is out of financial reach and racial profiling across the country is at its worst, we deserve more than empty political promises by a campaign that says it wants the Latino vote but doesn’t want to give our issues the time of day.
YOU MAY REMEMBER THAT MEMBERS OF THE SANCTUARY compiled a 38 point questionnaire on specific immigration questions and sent them to three presidential candidates with a deadline of the end of this month, June 2008.
