ON SEPTEMBER ELEVEN, I cannot help but think of violence and tyranny for various reasons. Of course there is the obvious violence that tore apart Manhattan in 2001 and infected our reasoning and society with febrile veins of fear. But then, there are other tyrannies that found the date of September 11 a comfortable roost.
WHAT IS 287(g)? Unless you are familiar with immigration legislation or follow the dialogue, you may not be entirely sure. I wanted to comment on the issue, as well as provide a basic introduction and so for this week’s News With Nezua, I tackled the 287(g) provision of the Immigration and Nationality Act.
WHAT USGOV is now doing to México by way of NAFTA and the overwhelming of México’s market by US-subsidized Agribusiness it does directly in other nations through coups and forced legislation. The Empire, in yet another shape, sprawls and burps and bleeds and chews up humans as it moves into its final phases.
I AM PROUD TO HAIL FROM MEXICO. And I underline this pride both to satisfy my own soul, to boost up gente who struggle, too, under the heavy load of a dominant culture’s disdain. But I also make it a point to connect with other Latinos, with other gente from Latin America, because we share so much and we are stronger when we celebrate this.
THE MOMENT that the news of the “Swine Flu” hit the wires, it was easy to predict what the anti-immigrant faction would have to say about it. This particular cadre of caustic and crazed voices are so locked into their views that their contributions are unnecessary in a dialogue that preferences truth.
CHE: “HOW LONG THIS PRESENT ORDER, based on the absurd idea of caste, will last is not within my means to answer, but it’s time that those who govern spent less time publicizing their own virtues and more money … funding socially useful works.”
OVER HERE, you have people working together to overcome changes that scare just about everyone. And over there, people are taking advantage of the fear that often accompanies these changes. In this season of giving and love and familia, may you and yours be surrounded by those who fight with and for you.
LASA: The way to manage immigration is not by building a giant wall. The United States should support more equitable economic development in Mexico and Central America. The U.S. must reconsider drug control policies that have not worked and have been part of the problem of political violence. And the U.S. must renew its active support for human rights throughout the region. Unfortunately, in the eyes of many Latin Americans, the USA has come to stand for the support of inequitable regimes.
