ELLE, PHD: I expected to cry if Barack Obama won the election—everyone who knows me expected me to cry. I even had friends who called and said, “Are you crying yet?” Admittedly, I dashed away a few tears, but I didn’t really cry. The joy I felt was overshadowed by worry. And why am I letting it get to me?
DEAR MISTER PRESIDENT ELECT: You are too smart to pretend you don’t see all this. So I say if you do not act on it and soon, you are nodding along with this scourge that threatens both our peoples and the whole nation as a consequence. And I know I don’t need to be overly direct about this, but I will anyway:

Now, when John McCain and Sarah Palin are whipping their followers into a sick, bubbling, dangerous tangle of elbows and fear and bubbling vitriol. Where is the talk of scary mobs? So often we mention Change. Let us not forget that with real change always comes resistance and pain.
FRAIDYCAT MCCAIN and his Republican cronies and conspirers continue to do what they always do: lie to us, pretend to be what they ain’t, and endeavour to use us to feed their own power. This is not our people. This is liars wearing masks that have a McCain face painted on the outside, and blood of nuestra gente dripping down the inside, where they can sniff and lick at it in privacy, feeding their vampiric lifestyles and political agendas.
THEIR VILLAGES ARE DYING. They come from towns with no future, from families with no food. They are lucky to bring a ragged toothbrush on the trip and luckier to avoid rape, murder, or starvation on the way. On the way to hope. On the way to nothing, really, but a desperate dream of survival, a mirage of prosperity, the Land of Opportunity. Where Lady Liberty holds her lamp high…so the squads of ICEmen can see well enough to snatch up the hunger-wracked wanderers and hurl them into the frothy maw of Camp Halliburton.

Yet—dammit—the planet requires my input on certain subjects and I’m not going to stand in between humankind’s need for that input and…me. Because that would just be selfish.
