A LOTERIA STYLED TRIBUTE to the man who spearheaded the hostile and persecutory racist vibe spreading further and deeper over the state of Arizona every day: Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

BE THE FIRST OR BETTER YET THE LAST to bid on my new artwork, a Lotería card of El Arpaio. This one and only painting of its kind is now up for auction. All proceeds go toward helping Nezua not be homeless!
IN THIS WEEK’S NEWS WITH NEZUA we cover Baby Carillo (snatched, returned, and snatched again); A wrong way onto the Highway Ramp of Deportation; Museum forays into the Immigration dialogue, and a moment of celebration at Joe Arpaio’s expense. Adelante!
ON ALL FRONTS, THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION VEERS away from making any meaningful or cohesive change for the undocumented community. Just last night in his speech for health care reform he made sure the people of the US know that the health of millions of people in our country is not worth consideration. And in many other ways, the US Government sends the message that this is one group the USA can safely think of as the unwelcome and unworthy Other.
WHAT IS 287(g)? Unless you are familiar with immigration legislation or follow the dialogue, you may not be entirely sure. I wanted to comment on the issue, as well as provide a basic introduction and so for this week’s News With Nezua, I tackled the 287(g) provision of the Immigration and Nationality Act.
NEWS WITH NEZUA is a new feature, where I will wrap up the past week’s Latino-centric and Immigration-related news. I can’t promise it will be a consistent feature, though I will try my best. In this week’s news: Kennedy’s passing, White House stalling, 287(g) growing, MAPA marching, and Whirlpool Border-Hopping.
THE WHITE HOUSE understands the value of the press conference and the press release and the public statement. Many positive things have been said about what will be done on immigration legislation. What is getting less notice are some of the actual moves being made in realtime—like the expansion of the disastrous 287(g) program.
THIS WEEK, two comprehensive reports on the health of immigrant detainees were released by Human Rights Watch and the Florida Immigrant Advocacy Center. let there be no doubt that in the custody of ICE, immigrants are, literally, “dying for decent care.”
THOUGH WORKING TO CLOSE Guantánamo, peppering his speech with talk of law and order, and restoring US image to the world abroad, Obama still risks muddying up his accomplishments with a blatant hypocrisy: we cannot lead the way on liberty or justice when investing in detention systems from Arizona to Iraq.
GAO REPORT ON ICE: U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has not clearly articulated the objectives of the 287(g) program or the guidelines that participating police departments must follow, thereby creating confusion and mismanagement. Furthermore, ICE has not demonstrated effective oversight of the 67 partnership agreements and 950 officers who have been trained, potentially resulting in “misuse of authority.”
