ON MY WAY TO THE STORE TODAY, I tried to kill a small bird. Don’t hate! The GOP will set you straight. But let me start at the beginning because the end is tragic. O, If only I possessed the ability to base my feelings on an understanding of the world, instead of being a human zero-sum kneejerk reaction…like Jeff Sessions (R) of Alabama.
THEY BESEECH THE WISE LATINA TO SOOTHE THEIR TREMBLING AND WOUNDED EGOS. Like petulant babies they repeatedly, almost to the point of absurdity, demand she confess her irrational temperament. And throughout it all cannot see the irony.
SO YESTERDAY AND TODAY have been the SCOTUS hearings on Judge Sonia Sotomayor’s nomination to the Supreme Court. I have no doubt that she’ll shatter the small stereotype some of these ailing senators like Scat-mouth Sessions hold in their brittle minds, and it may hurt. I also have no doubt she will rock the process in general, and we shall see her on the Supreme Court before long.
THE WEINER FAMILY makes its monies from selling hate to the masses; hate pointed and aimed at immigrants, queers, Obama, liberals, and a host of others. It’s a savage and soulless way to make a living—especially when at the same time you are raking in cash from the same people you abuse thus.
SOMETHING MUST CHANGE. When US citizens already suffering from a terrible loss are attacked by other citizens en masse, and for nothing more than having Spanish names, it makes me feel like the past has reared up; days of Civil Rights era struggle, days of anti-Greaser hate, days of Los Vatos Locos and the dangerous fabled Pachuco. La Lucha Sigue.
WE TALK HERE OFTEN about the climate of hate against Latin@s fomented by a confluence of factors from the detention industry to right wing radio to pandering (or racist politicians) to the efforts of hate groups like VDARE and FAIR….
WHEN CONSIDERING THE MURDER OF BRISENIA FLORES, it does not help us find any valuable truth or approach any larger societal problem to isolate the event and wall it off from the larger context of anti-immigrant and thus anti-Latino hate and hostility in this nation. We have a larger problem on our hands.
THREE THINGS immediately shock the conscious soul upon learning about the murder of Luis Ramirez. The simple manner in which he died is the first of those. His death was a gruesome and violent one, and inarguably racially motivated. And yet, that is not the most horrific part of the killing.
FROM THE “SWINE” FLU’S declining fervor to 2009’s May Day marches for worker rights and immigrant solidarity; from the tragic killing of Luis Ramirez to legislative movement on immigration, these are tumultuous times. But it is precisely such conflict and challenge that provides the best opportunities to make lasting change.
THE MOMENT that the news of the “Swine Flu” hit the wires, it was easy to predict what the anti-immigrant faction would have to say about it. This particular cadre of caustic and crazed voices are so locked into their views that their contributions are unnecessary in a dialogue that preferences truth.
WE KNEW THAT THERE WOULD BE a faction of people so wed to their own racist thought patterns they would be incapable of dealing with the fact that a non-white person was president of the US. I guess I thought they’d be a bit more honest about it.
THERE HAS BEEN A PUSH as of late to communicate to the public how deeply into our system hate groups have infiltrated. In this anxious time we are living through, minorities and immigrants become scapegoats for society’s ills. People get hurt and hunted because of it. This is a good video to pass around to help.
IT WOULDNT BE WORTH MY TIME to highlight yet one more slanderous, lazy, slimy, fictionalized piece of anti-Mexican propaganda but for the fact that it comes at such an egregious time and under such a prestigious banner…
I CAN’T THINK of a more uplifting message than this: Put your time, energy, and heart into something and the energy will return. It will grow, it will propagate, it will continue. And this lesson can be found in events both small and large.
A HATE CRIME is made possible by many actors, not just one ugly mind and hand. You have the actual perpetrator of the act, the immediate culture that encourages and approves of this behavior, the legislation that provides a moral/legal underpinning for certain views, and those who craft the legislation. All will soon be held accountable.
