THE MOMENT that the news of the “Swine Flu” hit the wires, it was easy to predict what the anti-immigrant faction would have to say about it. This particular cadre of caustic and crazed voices are so locked into their views that their contributions are unnecessary in a dialogue that preferences truth.
OREGON: Public Health officials from the state of Oregon, Portland held a news briefing yesterday to discuss the latest information on the swine flu outbreak, local readiness to respond should the situation elevate and what people can do to keep themselves and others safe.
WILL THE SWINE FLU SERVE AS A WAKE UP CALL for the agricultural industry, finally? That a different system is needed? That our current output and mass production rates are an illusion built on dangerous processes? A Wall Street Meltdown of the food supply that teaches us we cannot sustain ourselves with a structure that lacks integrity and tries to compensate with excellent marketing?
WE KNEW THAT THERE WOULD BE a faction of people so wed to their own racist thought patterns they would be incapable of dealing with the fact that a non-white person was president of the US. I guess I thought they’d be a bit more honest about it.
THE NATIVIST LOBBY HAS INSINUATED ITSELF into the media dialogue on immigration to all our detriment. They create a false boogeyman of danger and parasitism, and promote the impression that the only response is a harsh, punitive one doled out in cuffs or a cell. The results of the February Bellingham raids are in, and put the lie to this screech of extremist thought.
THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA DELIGHTS IN TELLING THE HOSTAGE TALE wherein the mighty snipers from the powerful US NAVY took down the wicked scourge of the seas and President Obama is a) Weak or b) Virile. But not even the Green Liberal faction is using the moment to talk about the oppression and poisoning of the Somalis.

All the facts in hand show, inarguably, that the Drug War model is a failed method of dealing with immigration—even though President Obama seems intent to resurrect it.
In the modern world, borders do not separate families, nor commerce, nor soldiers, nor bank accounts and their owners. And NAFTA has allowed Mexico’s corn crop to be so devalued that Mexico—the land where the plant was born roughly 5,000 years ago—now imports corn, forcing streams of campesinos to migrate north…where we lock them up.
PRESIDENT OBAMA declares at a town hall meeting that it is in all our interests that the heads of Lou Dobbs’, Tom Tancredo, Bill O’Reilly explode in a salsa-fantastic burst of incoherence. Which will happen as soon as they watch this video.
THIS IS NOT the first time in history that those with power looking only toward their own profit margin have unwittingly led their hand to disastrous effects on larger populations’ basic ability to live.
THERE ARE NO VOICES, YET, advising us on why we should be content in 2009 to watch complex issues of society be reduced to issues of force and more and more of our society handed over to military control. While Congress signals change (perhaps) in some areas of our approach to immigration, in other areas we seem poised to repeat old mistakes.
THOUGH WORKING TO CLOSE Guantánamo, peppering his speech with talk of law and order, and restoring US image to the world abroad, Obama still risks muddying up his accomplishments with a blatant hypocrisy: we cannot lead the way on liberty or justice when investing in detention systems from Arizona to Iraq.
