Tuesday Morning Newspaper Notes

Tuesday Morning Newspaper Notes

BIENVENIDOS! Let’s sit for a moment and savor this hot, sweet, brew as the sun rises over the land. Let’s share news of the day and talk about what we lend our hand to; how we can make things a little better for all, or reach a little higher ourselves, or root out injustice.

ICE Engaging in ‘Widespread Constitutional Violations’

FIRST THEY CAME FOR THE UNDOCUMENTED…. but anyone who studies history knows what comes next. If you and I allow Them to be abused, we lose. I write of the ballooning Constitution-ignoring para-police agency named ICE.

Immigration Advocates Issue Statement Condemning Expansion of 287(g)

THE WHITE HOUSE understands the value of the press conference and the press release and the public statement. Many positive things have been said about what will be done on immigration legislation. What is getting less notice are some of the actual moves being made in realtime—like the expansion of the disastrous 287(g) program.

[NAM] Time for Immigration Reform Is Now

I SAT IN ON a White House debriefing conference call on Friday, and took notes. I’ll write on that soon, and talk about my own thoughts, hopes, and fears on the issue. For now, here’s a New America Media op ed on why the time for immigration is now.

Nezua Named Commonweal Institute Fellow

THAT SOUND YOU HEAR is the moan of the Newspaper industry as readers abandon the pulpy, stinking ship in droves. This is, in part, why the blogosphere has taken off and some troublemaker like myself can gain such a platform. (Well, that and my secret salsa!)

The Luis Ramirez Murder: A Logical Step in the Process of Establishing a Subhuman Class

THREE THINGS immediately shock the conscious soul upon learning about the murder of Luis Ramirez. The simple manner in which he died is the first of those. His death was a gruesome and violent one, and inarguably racially motivated. And yet, that is not the most horrific part of the killing.

Union Square May Day March

MAY DAY MARCH in NYC: Trillions for bank bailouts just gives money to the same bankers whose policies are gutting the economy. WE need to control the financial system, not leave it in the hands of a pack of billionaires.

Department of Health Declares Public Health Emergency

THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES has declared a Public Health Emergency. They repeatedly urge us not to panic and lay out their plans of what comes next. They also offer the possibility that things may begin to “ramp up” in areas and advise you to think about what that would mean in your local community.

MADE IN L.A. IS AN EMMY-WINNING DOCUMENTARY about three Latina immigrant mujeres who organize and fight for labor protections in the US. I’ve reviewed the film and provided information here to help you spread the word about the May Day screenings, if you care to.

Unified Labor Movement Supporting “Rights-Based” Immigration Reform

LABOR GIANTS SEIU AND A.F.L.C.I.O have come to an accord on the fight for immigration reform and today proudly told the press of the unified effort, one which will seek, “finally, a principled public dialogue” and one, according to SEIU, that “does justice to our heritage as a nation of immigrants.” Get the link to the Nezua-notated liveblog of the call in this post.

Government Accountability Office: ICE are Agents of Chaos and Confusion

GAO REPORT ON ICE: U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has not clearly articulated the objectives of the 287(g) program or the guidelines that participating police departments must follow, thereby creating confusion and mismanagement. Furthermore, ICE has not demonstrated effective oversight of the 67 partnership agreements and 950 officers who have been trained, potentially resulting in “misuse of authority.”
