LOU DOBBS: 0, THE FUTURE: 1

AFTER THIRTY YEARS, Lou Dobbs is pushed off CNN. “Strong winds of change have begun buffeting this country,” he says on his last night, “affecting all of us.” Adios, Lou.

I FELT…A SUDDEN SURGE PULSE THROUGH THE FORCE: as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in joy and were collectively uplifted.

CNN has fired Lou Dobbs. [Yes, I know it's presented as him leaving, them kindly suggesting, etc...] It’s a surprising move which I barely imagined in my dearest cynical calculations. Yet, it is practical, too. And laudable! And it torques back the hatevibe a little, which is good for all of us. Let me be the first to say nice move, CNN.

My favorite part is where he begins talking about how he has been urged to join the problem solving view, and begin contributing positively.

Shouts out to all who worked hard on this push—bastadobbs.com, dropdobbs.com, America’s Voice, Media Matters, and all those who I can’t know about or forgot about, bloggers and activists alike—who organized to help bring voices together and make it clear that yes, the winds of change are blowing. So get with it or get on with ya self.

I’M LOOKIN AT YOU, ARPAIO!!!

[update: Statement by SPLC President Richard Cohen on the Departure of Lou Dobbs from CNN makes a great point about Lou's utter hypocrisy, complaining how issues are handled by "partisanship" now! It's the pot calling itself wack and thinking it's pointing to the kettle. I sorta got at the same thing in the recent video What You Make Manifest.]

[update 2: I'm actually getting some whiny emails from people trying to defend Dobbs. Trying to pretend there is no established link between his noise and violence. Read up before you hassle my contact form.]

  2. El Tejano says:

Well despite his move away from CNN, it won’t surprise me to see him pop up on some other network (read Don Imus)
He’s like that sticky moco (booger) that you can’t flick off your finger.

  3. Anika says:

You don’t know how this makes me feel. Between Beck on HLN and Dobbs, I saw no reason to watch CNN. When Beck left, that was a good day. This? It’s even better.

  4. Francsico Lopez says:

Si se pudo…Todo se puede. Let’s not drop the ball, but rather continue to eveolve our political power. What is next on the agenda?

  5. Marie C says:

WHile I know you will be creating a new dance for this, I think tonight I will need to have a drink and do my very own victory dance as a way of saying “ADIOS LOU!”.

  6. Rafael says:

I expect he will ensconce himself inside the Talk-Hate Radio universe. Which makes him easier to ignore.

  7. Diallo Jamal says:

Are we going to see a Dobbs smackdown dance in the next News with Nezua? 8-)
Edit: I see Marie C and I are on the same page…

  8. Aracely says:

What are we celebrating ? Do we dance because a man has lost his job ? That he was suitably punished for his views on illegal immigration ?
Violence will not stop because he is gone.

    • nezua says:

Well, I imagine the simplest answer is “we” celebrate what we feel is worth rejoicing over. And if you, for example, feel nothing to be rejoicing over, than you do not celebrate.

Myself, I celebrate a notably vocal and apparently inexorable cultural shift that pushes back on old fashioned racism and fearmongering that walks hand in hand with racist violence. I would think this would be cause to celebrate, regardless of whether or not it is the last push or just one in a series.

  9. Jack Kehoe says:

I repsect the comments of the Latino American citizens. However, once again we see the Mexican flag being waved and Mexican Americans unwilling to honor our Consitution and what it spells out about illegal entries…by any country, race or religion. Let’s play by the rules that make this the greatest one in the World….and why some Mexicans chose the USA over their own homeland. DAH! I doubt if this will be published, but at least I cleared my heart without predjudice against my Mexican American Amigos who came here legally and earned the right to express their opinions…just as I’ve done.

    • nezua says:

What is wrong with waving the mexican flag, Jack?

What does the Constitution say about “illegal entries”?

What are “the rules that make this the greatest one in the world”?

By rules do you mean “treaties”? Like NAFTA? and CAFTA? By rules do you mean free and fair elections? By “rules” do you mean invasion of other countries to snatch their resources? By “rules” do you mean giving power to people like Joe Arpaio who feels justified in violating peoples’ constitutional right to be free from unwarranted search and seizure, to not be racially profiled? By “rules” do you mean the laws that somehow are allowing for our prisons to be mostly populated by people of color, although our proportionate rates of crime should dictate otherwise in a fair society?

Do you really think Mexicans choose the US because they like it better? Do you think it doesnt hurt them to leave the land of their birth behind? To leave family members behind? To leave a land that loves their language and is not hostile to it behind?

Do you honestly think that people who are undocumented do not have the right to “express their opinions”?

I feel sort of sorry for you. But there’s nothing wrong here that a little education can’t fix.

Keep on, and thanks for doing your best to be respectful here, while disagreeing.

  10. Dennis says:

Thank you so much for getting rid of Lou Dobbs, he pulled me like a magnet to your network, now I can go back to my second favorite anchor Shepard Smith.
