México: She Welcomes the Opportunity!
MEXICO is instituting an “Open Arms” policy; if you want to be there and be part of things, then they want you, too.
AND OFFERS FULL AMNESTY TO ALL ILLEGAL US IMMIGRANTS! As well as to undocumented immigrants from all nations!
Juan Ignacio Pedroza, Migratory Regulations Official for México says that the government of México wants to have “an open arms policy;” all foreigners who want to contribute should be allowed to and are welcome. México simply wants them documented. No prosecutions, no jail, no problem. This move will offer them a path to citizenship.
According to the video, México has “changed its approach toward immigrants” to simplify the process of becoming a citizen: they are now viewing immigrants through an economic lens. And more people wanting to contribute is good for the economy. This officially makes the government of México in at least one way, ten times smarter than so many pundits and politicians right here in the US.
And it’s so warm! And sunny. Look at those relaxed expats on the benches. Makes you wonder. Will México be the next Florida for those seeking retirement?
This move on México’s part offers an attractive option to some, and also destroys the argument so often slurred out in comment threads by those tiresome racist trolls who implore you DO YOU KNOW WHAT MEXICO DOES TO THEIR ILLEGAL IMMIGRINTZ??? then proceeding to unleash a stream of visions of Victorian era blood tinged barbarism as if the demons in their minds actually live in México.

I’ve written on my experiences as a “mojado en reverso” before (way back in December 2005: (http://mexfiles.net/2006/12/20/ill-fess-up-my-life-as-an-illegal-alien/). There are still some problems — shakedowns and exploitation of Guatemalan and other Central Americans who are “in transit” elsewhere, and there are difficulties for illegals who are cheated on their paychecks, or are told they could be deported for complaining about labor conditions (especially for seasonal gringo tourist hotel workers) — or, are competing with union workers (the sex workers’ union in Mexico City continually complains about Ukranian and Polish lap dancers — I guess blondes get more funds or somethin’) — but it’s always been more or less true that Mexico will overlook “illegals” who are working and not causing trouble.
The only criticism I have of Frank Contreras’ report is that he is only talking to well-heeled immigrants … most of whom don’t even think of themselves that way, but as “expats” — i.e., they expect to maintain a high consumption lifestyle (water and electricity for starters) that Mexico just can’t provide — and are somewhat exploitive whether they mean to or not. Ironically, the biggest complaint about future gringo immigration is a theoretical strain on our health care system — a lot of those geezers who retire here aren’t paying into our social security system. The experiences of Brazilian, Congolese, Korean and Guatemalan immigrants may be very different.
Sure hope we DON’T become Florida… that’d suck!
RE: your criticism of his report: Agreed, and I think Contreras is using that tone on purpose, purposely tagging obviously bougie white folks as “illegal aliens.” The note of irony in his delivery makes me smile…and I feel this report, if not the law itself, is basically being announced and fashioned to make a statement about the US’s current draconian approach to people who want to be part of a society and be productive but instead are treated like felons.
