Best McCain Campaign Metaphor Yet!

STEPHEN COLBERT always jabs and parries and stutter-steps while most of his guests are busy arranging their facial expression or shouting out unfunny jokes to try and appear as if they are keeping up. Author Sherman Alexie gets off some fast shots and smart comments as he makes his case for Barack Obama.

sombrero tip to Marisol

A HUMOROUS SNIPPET of Colbert for ya Sunday. This is Sherman Alexie, author of The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, and you might not guess it from his overall friendly and loose demeanor, but he’s very quick witted. In fact, this short exchange has got to be one of my favorite yet on Colbert. (Okay, maybe it has a tiny bit to do with some of the jokes about Smallpox and related realities/facts rarely discussed in the MSM.) Stephen always jabs and parries and stutter-steps while most of his guests are busy arranging their facial expression or shouting out unfunny jokes to try and appear as if they are keeping up. Alexie gets off some fast shots and they are some smart comments! Colbert actually gets stumped a few times on a response, though of course always keeps his good sense of humor. You’ll see what I mean about the McCain Campaign metaphor at the end. Happy Sunday!

I love Alexie so much. It’s also great to see Colbert’s face as he realizes that he’s dealing with someone who is as smart and quick as he is (which of course almost never happens).

  2. Sylvia/M says:

Ouch. That was an awesome interview. There needs to be a special show where guests that can go head to head with Colbert all sit around a table and trade barbs.

  3. nezua says:

agreed! i was laughing out loud. especially at that last comment where you see Colbert’s eyes sort of flicker to admit “that was a good shot.”

ah – when was this? I can’t believe I missed it. I’ve been in love with Sherman Alexie for years and rarely miss Colbert. Augh. THANKS for sharing this!

thank you for the good humor of intellegent wit in some of it’s finest form. you are of the greatests watchdogs, and as i have said before, an awesome scout for your readers nezua. Alexie brought out, what gives colbert his act class. alexie had colbert one upped the whole way, and priceless colberts expression of recognition and respect for the better said…he knew when and how to show his defeat, with respect to the winner. i’m still smilin.

and yes…best mccain campaign metaphor yet.

    Nezua:

Excellent. I think Colbert was having a very hard time not laughing out loud at the McCain comment.

  8. Christina says:

It’s not often that one sees Colbert speechless but by the end there, I really think he was.

The smallpox blanket comment was just priceless. I wonder how many of Colbert’s younger viewers had the intellectual curiosity to find out what they were talking about if they didn’t know already.

  9. Theriomorph says:

Colbert’s face at the end was priceless – he looked like he was going to try to keep going, but decided to gracefully (and pretty happily, I’d say) concede defeat to Alexie, who kicked his ASS.

Long live Sherman Alexie – not only one of our best living writers, but one who can consistently out-wise-guy the wise-guys.

  10. democommie says:

Let’s not forget that Stephen Colbert is a faux scumbag. I’m sure he enjoys having his character get “schooled” by guests like Alexie.

  11. nezua says:

oh but he loves his wit and ego more! and never hesitates to use them, even in the faux cause of batting back liberal guests. :) but yes, agreed. under, it is a win-win for him.

  12. sweetleaf says:

yes, there in lies colbert”s talent, nice to see him with an equal, with the ability for contesting and challenging the faux (as well as ego and wit in action),…i’m still smilin!
