Friday Morning Rebel Roll Call
I TALK A LOT ABOUT BOB MARLEY, quote him, name domains after his lyrics, and so on. There was no more prevalent music in my childhood than Bob Marley, and his views on life informed some of my own early points of view even when I wasn’t aware it was happening. Or maybe they just provided the perfect scoring to my 70s experience, eh?
Why can’t we roam this open country?
Oh why can’t we be what we wanna be?
We wanna be free—Bob Marley, Rebel Music
I TALK A LOT ABOUT BOB MARLEY, quote him, name domains after his lyrics, and so on. There was no more prevalent music in my childhood than Bob Marley, and his views on life informed some of my own early points of view even when I wasn’t aware it was happening. Or maybe they just provided the perfect scoring to my 70s experience, eh? Regardless, his words on hunger, social injustice, oppression, law, spirit, love and joy resonate on and now it is my own children who hear his soulful proclamations daily. And…my neighbors. Who may, I admit, not be feeling the love so early. But we are, aren’t we. One love, early risers, one love.
Finally I must mention in such a blog focusing on identity that like me and Obama, Bob Marley is also a halfbreed. Mestizolicious Powa, baby.
Y ahora? Kick it!

Nezua, I’ve been away so long I didn’t realize you’d moved. This is very cool, my friend.
Love Marley as well. Growing up in Chicago in the ’60s and ’70s, there was one radio station — WXRT — that played reggae from time to time, especially Marley. It was a rare occurrence, but the occasional fix tided me over till he finally started to get the respect he deserved, from a more mainstream audience.
On a somewhat related note, over at Jesus’ General’s place he was riffing on the Sarah Palin apocalyptic vision; so in a comment I posted a link to a video of the Clash doing “Armagideon Time.” Not a bad reggae joint for a bunch of working class English dudes.
Be well.
‘Until the color of a man’s skin is of no more significance than the color of his eyes, there’s war.’ Truest words I’ve ever heard.
Nez – you have great taste in music. And thanks again for turning me on to that Eddie Dee/La Secta video – it led me to all kinds of great new stuff. Have you seen this one?

Perfect Saturday morning soundtrack, Nezua. Muchos gracias amigo
Loved Marley and his anti-occupational stances! I wonder what he would think about the state of political affairs in our country.
Do ya suppose something is afoot in white “america?” White “american” women are tipping the scale for the white ol’ man and the fairy queen/wicked witch of the north. Look for “Obama Waffles“. Don’t want post the link to my IPO/AP story but take a look. Even Dobson’s Focus on the Family is in on it with a wink. Of course they have to get a lick in on the brown types too, just for good measure.
wow, thank you for the feast for my senses. marleys influence on you nezua…beautifully obvious. a perfect start for anyone any day, kinda like “three little birds on my doorstep”… i loved seeing his face again. this is what some awesome memories are made of for me, and i’m back to wanting to put a marley poster back up on my living room wall. significant with meaning.
note – i am one white women who will not tip the scale for the white ol’ man and the fairy queen/wicked…no thanx. i’m staying with obama, not to leave him for anyone, (not even ron paul who will be on my states ballet), to best do my part for the better outcome. i’m counting on the current events of the evil fairy tale being that of the hollywood nature it portrays, msm only… and an intelligent consciousness will prevail?
I wish music could magically take us where we need to go. I’m becoming sad and frightened and discouraged and probably a little more dangerous, but not feeling very effective. Help us, Obi-wan Kenobi (Bob Marley), you are our only hope!
