I MENTIONED RECENTLY our little group dedicated to bringing human rights, dignity, fairness, and kindness (as well as public attention) to the migrant workers being persecuted and exploited these days by the absence of sane immigration laws and the growth of the prison-for-profit system. It’s called The Sanctuary, and it’s a budding community (so please come by and join) and an increasingly recognized media source.
That’s why a couple of our members—smart and highly competent mujeres—are being interviewed by CNN tomorrow on the comprehensive questionnaire we put together and sent to three different Presidential campaigns. (To which we’ve received no reply as of yet.)
Please tune in to CNN at 8:30 tomorrow morning (Tuesday, EST) to hear Kety E. speak. [update, too late: It was at 8:24, but we had someone record it and it will be posted soon]
The Latino blogosphere is organizing with force because we are tired of the narratives in place, maintained by the loudest voices of media at the moment. Especially as it relates to raza caught in the trap of political calculation, right-wing hate and misdirection, progressive left-wing rationalization, general apathy and collective momentum and their own very human and immediate needs. We know that the massive cruelties being perpetrated against so many families and human beings in our midst—especially when it is their work bringing so much food to our tables and other services into our lives—is no “Pet Issue.” It is not “American” nor is it acceptable. Nor are soundbytes or odes to guacamole and worker’s slogans in the mouths of candidates when election time rolls around—not in place of action, kindness, sanity, decency.
